It's been a little while since, I posted. Sorry! Well, the design of the cover is finished and it looks great! The designer incorporated my ideas of a Civil War battle scene and plantation style house in a very classy design. Since then, the manuscript has gone to the layout designer who made it into an actual book! The chapter headings all have the image of the plantation house faded in the background. It really looks neat.

This last week, the layout designer mailed me the final proof, or first copy of the book. It is so incredible to hold my story as an actual book! Now, I have three more weeks to read over it and make sure that the design is correct and the punctuation is correct. I'm about a third of the way through the book so far and it has been really fun. After I mail the book back with the corrections, I will get to talk with the marketing team and begin talks of selling the book!

Design!

We have settled on a design for the cover! I really like it. It has a plantation style house on the top. The middle is the title "Scarlet White" and the bottom is a smokey Civil War battle scene. It's all done in gray colors. It looks very classy.

Now, I'm in the layout design phase. This is where the designers turn the manuscript into a book! In about a month and a half, they will send me my story in book form for me to check over, read and return for the final touches. Then the book will be just about ready to sell and I'll work with the marketing team.

This has been a fun journey and I'm excited to actually hold the book in my hands!

edits and design

Hi! Just a quick update... I have received the final manuscript to check through and make my own edits. This will be the last time I am able to check it and make changes before it goes to a nation wide audience! I have until the 15th of July to do these edits, then I send it in and the editing phase is over.

A few days ago I talked with the graphic designer who will design the cover. We talked about images and colors. He asked about things that I might want to specifically show or use to evoke feelings in prospective readers. It was really pretty interesting. I gave him a few ideas and he said he'd see what he can do. He will come up with a few designs and send them to me by the end of the month. I will then have about four days to check through them, decide and approve the cover design. After that, we go to page layout and design. This seems to be the more fun and less technical part of the process.

The layout design is the last phase of production before the book is put together and I start working with the marketing team. So, by my calculations, it will be ready for sale by October and the official release date will be in January! This is a few months earlier than I thought, so I'm excited!

I'll post more when I get the cover design options. I'm excited to see what the designer comes up with!

First Edits

Hello! I have received the first edits from the conceptual editors. The lady I'm working with has had some very encouraging words for me and I'm excited to work with her. She has thoroughly checked and researched my work and sent me some thoughts on changes. The changes she suggests all have to do with dialogue. Items such as "he said", "She asked," placing of these tag phrases and some rewording of other phrases. She also highlighted some phrases she especially liked (one of them being my favorite line of my favorite scene - I'm so glad she liked it, too! :-) ). I'm super excited because the changes are much fewer than I was thinking might be the case. This is just a confirmation to me of God's blessing on my work - that I'm doing what He's asked me to do.

The next step is for me to complete these edits, return them to my editor by June 15th, then sign off on final edits by June 30th. After this, the book will go to design - cover design as well as layout design.

I haven't heard anything from the producer of the commercial yet, so I'm not sure what that will look like, but will update more as I know. Thanks for your prayers with this exciting adventure!

Next Phase

Hello! Well, I just started the next phase of production - conceptual editing. The editors are now looking over my manuscript and will make suggestions as to plot and character development. They'll send me some sugestions and I'll send back what I approve and make changes according to their suggestions. We'll go back and forth for a few weeks. This part of the process should take until the end of June. Then the manuscript will be sent to design.

I've also received an email from the publishers about multimedia options. I will choose from a short commercial about my book or a website. I'll also have the option of an audio book. The audio book is what I really want, but I would have to reduce my manuscript by 25%. So, I have a few things to think and pray about. But, things are moving right along!

Beginning Production

Happy Easter! Christ is risen, indeed!

Well, I've got time while Erwin is napping, so I thought I'd update on my book's progress. Production has begun! I received an email saying they have begun to do the copy editing part of the production. This is the technical editing of the book. During this part of the process, they will scrutinize the manuscript for grammatical errors and spelling errors. This will take a month.

I'll receive another email the beginning of May and we'll start with the content editing part of the process. This will be where I get to work with the editors on plot and character development.

The next steps will include layout and cover design as well as marketing. The whole process from beginning to shelves will take about 11 months. So, by March 2011, my book should be ready to sell!

I won't have anything else to write until May, so I'll update you all then! Happy spring!

First post

Welcome to my blog. I never thought I would actually do this, but circumstances have arisen to allow for this new experience. I sure seem to be having lots of new experiences in the past two years! Thank you to all of you who have kept up with me and Erwin throughout this time, through prayers and posts on the caring bridge site and every other way. As I've said many times, God has truly blessed us with wonderful family and friends.

God has been good to us in our grief. It has been hard to have Brandon gone and to have many new things to get used to, but he has kept us strong and provided for us in every way we have needed.

One super way he has provided for us is in making one of my long time dreams come true. I am going to be a published author! I have wanted to be a writer for a long time. Brandon encouraged me in my dream and even bought me a desk and set it up for me in our spare room at our old house specifically for my writing. He encouraged me in setting aside times for me to write and reading my works even though he didn't like fiction. He really wanted to be alive to see me published, but I know he knows it's happening now!

I have worked on my book, which is a historical fiction novel set in the American Civil War, for almost ten years and it is so exciting to get started on the next step. In January of this year, I received a phone call from a woman at Tate Publishing. She said she liked my style and my work. They offered me a contract on the spot! Production of my book (currently titled "Scarlet White", though the title could definitely change depending on what their editors think) is scheduled to begin in April. I will then work with grammatical editors and content editors, cover designers and layout designers, as well as marketers and others.

I am so incredibly excited for this opportunity. The part that scares me, though, is that I'll be required to do book signings! I wanted to become a writer because I feel I'm much better at communicating with people via the written word than with face to face conversation, given my immense shyness. Oh well, God has stretched me in many ways in the past, what's one more way, right?

I hope to post how everything goes throughout the process and share the excitement with all of you who have been wonderful and shared my grief. I figured this was a more appropriate way to share the bright times than through caring bridge, which has been an incredible tool for getting the word out during our dark hours.

I'll do my best! Thank you to all of you who have done so much for us in the past. I look forward to sharing in the future joy.
